THE SOUNDS OF THE CITY STORY

In 2012 I was lucky enough to acquire one thousand square feet of terrace space in the heart of Manhattan. My partner Joe designed a breathtaking garden there, but this rare gift wasn’t something we wanted to keep for ourselves; we wanted to share it broadly. But how? Would an outdoor concert work on a terrace nestled steps from Times Square’s boisterous environment?

During my childhood in Montana we’d gather on a dock on the lake to listen to live concerts. The wildlife was surprisingly loud (loons, in particular, are quite noisome). Yet somehow the hoots and chirps mixed with the performances in beautiful spontaneous harmony. With that synthesis in mind, I started Sounds of the City in 2014. The magic of a Sounds of the City concert is not just in the world-class performances. The exquisite music mixes with a riot of city sounds—from the manhole covers in the streets to the diamond on top of Worldwide Plaza—creating an urban symphony in our enchanted garden.

And, what is a musical evening with friends without some fun food to nosh?  Each ticket comes with unlimited wine and delicious hors d'oeuvres.  Guests are invited an hour before the concert to take in the view, mingle, and indulge themselves.  After a concert in the summertime there is always ice cream and guests are encouraged to savor the moment as long as they wish. The magic of the concert lingers and the reliable breeze refuses to blow away the charm.  You’ll want to spend the night… but eventually we will kick you out :)

Today, 9 seasons later, Sounds of the City fulfills many goals. We provide a unique, intimate performance space where established world class performers can try something new and up-and-coming artists can relish a performance that pays. We strive to keep ticket prices as low as possible so anyone can come to our events, while still providing a sizable fee to our incredible artists. Every penny of ticket sales goes to the artists once the food and wine are paid for.  We are creating a community of artists that reflects the diversity of our great city and would like you to be a part of it.

Through our video series we are reaching out to a larger audience and working with artists to realize their individual creative goals.

Can’t wait for you to experience Sounds of the City,

Paul Lincoln
